Jazz legend RICHIE COLE, an alto saxophonist, composer and arranger, leads a quintet in this season's final show in the series on Saturday, June 7th.
Cole's four decade plus distinguished career began in the late 1960s with a Downbeat Magazine scholarship to Boston's prestigious Berklee School of Music. Professional work followed shortly thereafter with jazz greats Buddy Rich, Lionel Hampton and Doc Severinsen. After an important, lengthy association with jazz singer Eddie Jefferson in the 1970s, Cole continued to perform and record with many other notable jazz artists. Freddie Hubbard, Art Pepper, Sonny Stitt, and Nancy Wilson are just a few of them.
With a resume containing more than 50 CDs, Cole remains an important voice for jazz's bebop genre and continues to record, tour worldwide and teach university master classes. His renown as a composer and arranger is also highlighted in his work with the "Manhattan Transfer" and "Five By Design" vocal groups, and his own "Alto Madness" Orchestra. Among other honors, Cole has served on the Board of the National Endowment for the Arts, including as chairman for a year.
